“The Cup” tells the story of one of Australia’s most emotional sporting moments, when Damien Oliver rode Media Puzzle to victory in the 2002 Melbourne Cup, wearing the silks of his dead brother who was killed in a race fall a few days before the Cup. His father had suffered the same fate many years earlier. The Press Club’s Andrew Rule covered that Cup and wrote the next day that the race was “by Hollywood out of Sentiment”.
