Update: Applications are now closed.
The Melbourne Press Club is pleased to open applications for the 2025/26 Michael Gordon Fellowships program.
Named in honour of the late former political editor of The Age, Michael Gordon, the fellowship provides grants to fund reporting projects specialising in social justice, Indigenous affairs, migration, human rights, international development and public interest journalism.
Previous recipients of a Gordon Fellowship have gone on to create impactful award-winning reporting covering a broad range of issues which wouldn’t have been covered adequately without financial support from the grant. Our most recent Gordon Fellows, Mike Bowers and Ben Doherty, speak about their work below.
The Fellowship program is open to all journalists, photographers and videographers working in news organisations of any size and in any medium. We also welcome applications from freelance journalists and accomplished student journalists who have a commitment to having their work published by an outlet at the time of application.
We encourage applications from journalists who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage, as well as journalists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

A flyer to distribute in newsrooms is available here.
Applications close on Monday November 3 at 5pm.
The Michael Gordon Journalism Fellowships are supported by The Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, with further support from Nine Entertainment, the National Press Club of Australia, and Robyn Carter.
