Winner: The Age Investigations and Visual Stories Teams, The Age, Carbon ‘sharks’: How private companies are cashing in on ancient practices

 

Judges’ citation:

In “Carbon Sharks” the team at The Age distills a complex issue into something both engaging and easily understandable for readers. By centering Indigenous voices, the piece was able to expose allegations of predatory behaviour by some carbon companies, while also increasing cultural understanding of how traditional owners are adapting old knowledge for the modern economy. The judges were impressed with how the newsroom approached the story — by newsgathering at a slow and steady pace the journalists were able to engender trust and ultimately present a better piece of reporting.
