30th Quills: Features Photograph

Winner: Christopher Hopkins, Al Jazeera, “They Teach Us to Sing”

Judges’ citation:

‘They teach us to sing’ is stunning photojournalism. Each image is an absolute knockout, but the first image of a boy in the cornfield is outstanding (DSF2007.JPG). The winning image is moving and emotive. It captures the boy’s vulnerability, yet it is dignified and respectful in conveying what is a complex narrative. Shooting in black and white draws the viewer’s eye to the subject, creating an intimacy that further enhances engagement. Hopkins has shown considerable commitment to telling the story, having pursued it since 2014. This long-term view has enabled him to develop trust and gain exclusive access. Hopkins’ body of work has changed government policy, showing the power of photojournalism.

Highly Commended:

Justin McManus, The Age, “Dyurrite Dreaming”

Shortlisted:

Jason Edwards, Herald Sun and The Australian, “Last Climb”

Katy Geraghty, The Age, “Lebanon - Impact on Civilians”
