30th Quills: News Report in Writing

Nick McKenzie, Ben Schneiders and David Marin-Guzman of The Age and The Australian Financial Review have won the News Report in Writing Quill for “Building Bad”.

 

Judges’ Citation

In an outstanding field of entries, this expose stood up for its impact and tenacious journalism. This was a story months in the making that demolished the most powerful union in the country and forced the Labor Party to re-evaluate its relationship with the CFMEU. Inquiries were launched and the CFMEU were plunged into administration. Powerful figures were forced to quit, after years of influence over hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayers funds. The story was well written, and produced expertly giving readers full access to a scandal that was happening in plain sight.
