Winner: Christopher Hopkins, Guardian Australia, “Kathy’s Last Wish”
Judges’ Citation:
Christopher has captured the intimacy, the love, beauty, pathos and patience of a dying Kathy caring for her son. These images are so moving. The composition of the winning image uses the position of Kathy’s arms to bring us into the picture. Kathy is in this moment, but where her eyes are focused suggests what’s next. The intimacy of her cheek against Steven’s forehead expresses the deep love of a mother for her son. In this moment Steven is at peace and looks contented. We are privy to this moment because of Christopher’s ability to be unobtrusive giving us a window into this intimate, complex relationship.
