Judges’ Citation:

Martin went to extraordinary lengths to create a custom-built rig to capture a unique image in what was the biggest news story of the year. The winning image captures an unguarded moment of Erin Patterson, where she is not aware of the camera and we get a glimpse of what she looks like in a private moment. There were few candid moments where Patterson was not under scrutiny. As a news event, it was not a visual story, and Martin found a way to give us access to Patterson outside of the court.
