31st Quills: Outstanding Camera Work (Over 4 Min)

Winner: Simon Winter, ABC TV, “Australian Story - Say My Name

Judges’ Citation:

Simon’s work on this Australian Story episode was a standout in this category, with little vision to work with, Simon used his camera skills superbly, with his steady, thoughtful, and easy-to-watch camera work. Less is more, they say, and this is demonstrated in his use of short focal length lenses and the FX6, which concentrates the focus of the viewer more evenly onto the subject. Lighting is minimal, with the use of larger, soft lights, creating a natural feel, far removed from backlights and background light.

Overlay is minimal, and re-creations can often be complex; however, there is a simplicity to the overlay, not contrived or strained. Add to this the practical aspects of shooting underwater, operating drones at night, and interviews in moving vehicles, all add to the range of camera work involved.

Highly Commended

Pete Healy, ABC Landline, “A Taste of Italy”

Andrew Altree-Williams, ABC 7.30, “Meet Melbourne’s Prince of Darkness’ keeping punk music alive”

Shortlisted
