31st Quills: Sports Photograph

Winner: Jason Edwards, Herald Sun, “Winners”

Judges’ Citation:

Jason has employed a risky tool in a moment where you have no control, and you have to get the picture. In that moment he used a technique that often delivers an unworkable photograph. With a zoom blur he creates a hyper realistic sense of movement, to capture the noise, the frenetic environment, the adoration and excitement of the fans and the exhilaration of the win. The treatment draws the viewer in to the captain and the cup. It gives focus in an otherwise chaotic scene. It’s a bold take. It’s often a very messy time when the players are leaving with the cup, but Jason’s treatment captures an isolated moment.
