Winner: Robyn Riley, Herald Sun, “Mum gives birth to wrong baby”
Judges’ Citation:
In an incredibly strong field, Robyn Riley’s exclusive story stood out due to the devastating human impact of an IVF mix-up, and the reform of the fertility sector it prompted.
This was a genuine scoop that was sensitively told. It also hit home to readers the gravity of the IVF error.
As a result of Riley’s dogged reporting the CEO of Monash IVF resigned, $60m was wiped from the company’s shareholder value, and another bungle was uncovered. It also led to state and federal reforms of the fertility sector. This was reporting of the highest public interest, sensitively told and obtained through excellent journalism.
