31st Quills: Young Journalist of the Year, sponsored by Josephine Nicholls

Winner: Selina Zhang, 9News

Judges’ Citation:

The judges praised Selina Zhang for demonstrating journalism at its best. Her reporting showcased exceptional access and initiative, particularly when she convinced the parents of young offenders to speak on camera. This achievement reflected her ability to build trust with vulnerable sources, combining compassion with tenacity.

Zhang's compelling storytelling captured the complexity and humanity of a difficult subject, while her live crosses demonstrated maturity and confidence.

The judges noted that her work exemplified the core principles of quality journalism: gaining unprecedented access, telling stories that matter, and doing so with empathy and integrity. Her ability to navigate sensitive territory whilst maintaining journalistic rigour made her a standout.
