2018 Quills: TV/Video News

Melina Sarris, Jackie Quist & Damian Shine of Seven News won the 2018 TV/Video News Quill for 'Prisoner Football Program'.

Judges' citation

Seven News reporter Melina Sarris, cameraman Damian Shine and producer Jackie Quist used their sources to discover that one-punch killer Dylan Closter was on day release and playing football. Over the course of a couple of weeks they were able to secretly get exclusive vision of him and run a series of stories where they revealed to the victim's devastated family what was happening. The story was followed by all media, led to public outcry and forced the State Government and other authorities to act. It transpired that this wasn't an isolated incident and prompted an urgent review and an immediate ban of day release for football.
