2020 Quills: Breaking News Coverage

The Herald Sun Breaking News Team has won the 2020 Breaking News Coverage Quill.

Judges' citation

In a news year like no other, the deaths of four police in a bizarre traffic smash as darkness fell on the Eastern Freeway posed a challenge for newsrooms and reporters to be fast, accurate and comprehensive. The Herald Sun team of Anthony Dowsley, Mark Buttler, Brianna Travers, Josh Fagan and Aneeka Simonis — with the back-up of a skilled production team — achieved this. They comprehensively covered the multiple angles of this breaking news event on digital, print and video platforms. They are judged the winners from an exceptionally strong field of entries.

The winning entry

Police Horror, Herald Sun, 22 April 2020

Other finalists

Matt Johnston, Sunday Herald Sun, Coronavirus Restrictions in Victoria

Lana Murphy, Nine News Melbourne, Miracle on the Mountain
