University of Melbourne student Sasha Gattermayr has won the 2023 MPC Student Journalist of the Year Award.

A charming feature, original and delightfully crafted - peeking into the world of carnivorous plant enthusiasts. A surprise piece, Sasha’s distinctive style impressed the judges with a fascinating blend of ecology and community – telling the story of a dedicated suburban group, obsessed with their love of plants such as the Venus fly trap.

Student Journalist of the Year Honour Roll
The MPC Student Journalist of the Year recognises the best in Victorian student journalism.
Enrolled student journalists are encouraged to enter a piece of journalism in any media that has been made available to the general public in Victoria. Judges focus on the originality, impact, quality and initiative of the work in determining he shortlist and winner.
The 2023 prize, provided by the Melbourne Press Club and NewsGuard, was $1,000 and flights, accommodation, and a ticket to the 2024 IRE conference in Orlando, Florida.
