The Melbourne Press Club is pleased to open applications for the 2025/26 Michael Gordon Fellowships program.

Named in honour of the late former political editor of The Age, the fellowship provides grants to fund reporting projects specialising in social justice, Indigenous affairs, migration, human rights, international development and public interest journalism.

Previous recipients of a Gordon Fellowship have gone on to create impactful award-winning reporting covering a broad range of issues which wouldn’t have been covered adequately without financial support from the grant.

Ben Doherty and Mike Bowers, under Guardian Australia, recently published their series of stories covering the calls to reopen the Paguna mine in Bougainville decades after it was at the center of a civil war that nearly tore apart the island. You can see their work here and hear about their experience in the videos below.

Other work from last year's Fellows is currently ongoing.

The Fellowship program is open to all journalists, photographers and videographers working in news organisations of any size and in any medium. We also welcome applications from freelance journalists and accomplished student journalists who have a commitment to having their work published by an outlet at the time of application.

We encourage applications from journalists who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage, as well as journalists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
