Gordon Award celebrates 10 years with new sponsorship

The Australian Sports Journalist of the Year award, named after legendary editor and reporter Harry Gordon, has a new sponsor to celebrate its 10th year.

Champion Data, the organisation integral to the statistical revolution that underpins a range of sports, will become the Harry Gordon Australian Sports Journalist of The Year sponsor for the next three years.

Entries for this year’s awards close on Monday at 5pm, and the winner will receive their award at the 30th Quill celebration at Crown Palladium on Friday, March 21.

The award has recognised some of the nation’s finest sports journalists, including Gerard Whateley, Michael Warner, Andrew Rule and Caroline Wilson.

Melbourne Press Club CEO Nick Richardson said Champion Data’s support for the Harry Gordon Award was an ideal match. “Harry understood the importance of innovation in sports coverage, and he would have been one of the first reporters to use data and analytics to inform his sportswriting,’’ Nick said.

Chris Hume (above), Director of Champion Data, said the company was proud to support the Harry Gordon Australian Sports Journalist of the Year Award.

“We admire and respect the vital role of great writing in sport; and recognise that data and analytics can serve as powerful tools to enhance storytelling,’’ he said.
