Statement: We recognise the contribution of young journalists at BuzzFeed

The Melbourne Press Club joins with the media sector in support for journalism in the digital realm and opportunities for young journalists and expresses our disappointment at the closing of the Australian BuzzFeed newsroom.

We, like many, were saddened to hear that Buzzfeed is to end its news operations in the UK and Australia.

BuzzFeed’s newsroom in Australia commenced in 2014. BuzzFeed provided a channel for a young audience to consume political news and opportunities for young journalists to demonstrate that they have a powerful voice and can punch above their weight.

Editor, Lane Sainty said yesterday, ‘BuzzFeed gave us space to experiment with covering politics for a young audience, and to tackle important and often under-covered beats like abortion, LGBTQ rights, Indigenous affairs, immigration and internet culture. I’ve always been grateful for that and very proud of our work.’

The Melbourne Press Club provides opportunities for journalists to be recognised for their work through the annual Quill Awards, as well as opportunities for young journalists with mentoring.
