William Dyson

1880 - 1938

Will Dyson was the first in an impressive line of Australian political cartoonists to win international acclaim.

He was the sharpest satirist of his day.

A committed socialist, he portrayed the working class as people with pride and dignity, while lampooning capitalists by decorating them with pot bellies, spats and a cigar.

In England, G. K. Chesterton said: "Mr Dyson is a man of genius" and an admiring critic in the Daily Sketch said Dyson was "the biggest thing Australia has produced".

Dyson was Australia's first official war artist. He portrayed Australian soldiers in France with great empathy, often depicting their sardonic humour in the face of despair and exhaustion.
