Whether you’re doing a cadetship, have moved to the regions to get your start at a rural paper, or are still studying and looking to make headways into your career, there are a few key skills you should have under your belt as an early-career journalist.

The panel will share the advice they wish they received in the first five years on the job.

Key points include:

  • developing and maintaining contacts
  • finding stories in complex reports and budget papers; and
  • surviving the modern newsroom and avoiding burnout.

 

About our industry guests

Nino Bucci is an award-winning justice and courts reporter at Guardian Australia. He has previously worked at the ABC and The Age.

Tara Librando is a court reporter for the Australian Associated Press. She previously worked for SBS and the Bendigo Advertiser newspaper.

Alex Lim is a designer-developer and digital graphics journalist with the ABC's Climate team. He has won several awards for digital innovation and design.

Moderated by the ABC's Madeleine Stuchbery.
