28th Quills: News Photograph

Darren Howe of the Bendigo Advertiser won the 2022 News Photograph Quill for his work “Angels On My Shoulders”

Judges' citation

Floodwaters across Australia were the most dramatic visuals of 2022. When the floods impacted Victoria Darren Howe overcame extremely difficult conditions of rain, and water spray from the rescue chopper. The harsh back-lighting all conspired to prevent Darren from capturing a real 'life or possible death' situation. Fortunately for all concerned, the outcome was positive. The camper was rescued from a precarious position, with his 4WD inundated, beside a rising river. Great exclusive news pictures.
