UN expert slams Australian secrecy laws

A UN expert has slammed the Australian government for effectively gagging civil society with secrecy laws and threats to human rights workers, whistleblowers and journalists.

The UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Michel Forst, released an interim report on 18 October, which also drew attention to the aggressive pursual of the sources of stories in the Guardian and other media outlets.
