Almost nothing about the creation of this story was easy. Through patient research and fine writing it reaches the most impenetrable places and gently draws out profound insights about trauma and grief and forgiveness. This extraordinary piece helps to heal the anguish of an army doctor who felt he didn’t do enough and an Afghan family who lost their father to the brutality of Australian soldiers. It is beautiful reporting.
