Honing fraud investigation skills at MPC Masterclass

The tricky and technical world of fraud investigation was unravelled and explained at Thursday’s MPC Masterclass event.

Attendees heard from Age business reporter Sarah Danckert, McGrathNicol corporate advisory specialist and forensic expert Matt Fehon AM, and McGrathNicol chair Jason Preston, who shared stories from cases they have worked on.

The trio took questions from moderator Nick McKenzie and the floor, providing valuable insight to those in the room.

Speaking after the event, Sarah gave some words of encouragement to journalists tackling their first fraud investigation assignments.

“Don't expect quick results from the regulator or police,” she said.

“Complicated financial complaints and fraud can take years to investigate and sometimes no action is taken by the authorities.

“That can be disheartening, but your stories are still important as they highlight issues and warn other potential victims.”
