Digital Invaders in our media patch

The recent revolution in the media landscape has seen a rush of ambitious immigrants - well-known international news brands riding the digital wave onto our shores, bringing fresh ideas and innovative methods and challenging the strongholds of established media players.

At the Melbourne Press Club 'Digital Invaders' lunch held on January 27 2016, guests heard from a panel moderated by social media expert and Press Club board member Isabelle Oderberg.

The three panelists - Emily Wilson, from Guardian Australia, Simon Crerar from Buzzfeed and Jenni Ryall of Mashable Australia - were all upbeat about their outlets' fortunes in Australia, with Emily Wilson telling the audience the Guardian's local business was insulated from funding problems by virtue of its connection to a UK parent.

They were also all in agreement about the necessary separation of reporting and advertising, and expressed enthusiasm about the creative potential of new platforms and content presentation - from sharing Australian regional content with the world to joining up with new local partners.
